Hearing the Voice of God
Hebrews 1:1-2—God, who [a]at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the [b]worlds;
The Word of God is the primary source for hearing from God.
His general will is found in His Word, but His specific will is revealed by the Holy Spirit.
The Word of God is the source for God’s specific will for your life.
God’s specific will for your life is always a function of His general will.
God’s general will is to all and for all, but His specific will is specific to the individual bound by the framework of His general will.
John 1:1 (NKJV)—In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
James 1:17 (NKJV)—Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
Knowing God’s general will for you is key to being able to hear His specific will for you.
The more time we spend with the Word of God, the more familiar we are of the voice of God.
John 10:2-5—But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep byname and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
Proverbs 1:20-23—Wisdom calls aloud [a]outside; she raises her voice in the open squares. 21 She cries out in the [b]chief concourses, at the openings of the gates in the city, she speaks her words: 22 “How long, you [c]simple ones, will you love [d]simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge. 23 Turn at my rebuke; surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.
1 Corinthians 1:30 (NLT)—God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself.
What you hear from God will never contradict the Word of God.
If what you are hearing from God goes against the Word of God, you aren’t hearing from God.
