My Money | Week 5

Positioning, Possessions, and Purpose

Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV)Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  • We store up what we believe to be in short supply.

  • When we don’t know where our future supply will come from, we worry

o   Worry is what happens when we don’t have an answer for, “What if?”

When we don’t think we have a sure source for the supply we need, we worry (where and how).

Jesus tells us there are two systems by which we get what we need.

  • A system where we store up our supply on earth (work—keep—decrease).

  • A system where we store it up our supply in heaven (work—give—increase).

o   One is a system that is based on fear—One is system that is based on faith.

Matthew 6:24-25 (NKJV) 24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. 25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

  • In one system, you’re enslaved to a way of thinking that causes you to spend your entire life chasing something that you’ll never find (work—keep—decrease).

Psalm 127:1-2 (NLV) Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders work for nothing. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the men who watch over it stay awake for nothing. You rise up early, and go to bed late, and work hard for your food, all for nothing.

Ephesians 4:28 (NKJV)  Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.

Luke 6:38 (TPT) 38 Give generously and generous gifts will be given back to you, shaken down to make room for more. Abundant gifts will pour out upon you with such an overflowing measure that it will run over the top! Your measurement of generosity becomes the measurement of your return.”

Mark 10:17-22 (NKJV) 17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” 18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ” 20 And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.” 21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” 22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Jesus was trying to get the rich young ruler to—step out of the wheel and into his purpose.

  • We can’t step into our purpose if we aren’t willing to step out of our wheel.

How you handle your money determines if you are free or enslaved—if you are a slave to your money (your wheel) you are not free to fulfill your purpose.

  • When we focus on the first system, we step away from the most basic piece of what our purpose is about—being a blessing to others—being a giver.

Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV)

28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

We experience freedom in our lives to the degree we are willing to trust what God has said.

Proverbs 3:9-10 (NKJV)Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the first fruits of all your increase; 10 So your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.

Malachi 3:10 (NKJV) 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.
